Type II Diabetes - Low Carbohydrate Diet And Diabetes

sin or slim affiliate disclaimer

Although there is no cure for type II diabetes, studies show that it is possible for some people to reverse it. Diet changes and weight loss could help maintain normal blood sugar levels without medication.

What Are The Symptoms Of Type 2 Diabetes?

Here are some signs of type II diabetes. If you have any of these signs, you may be developing or have already developed diabetes.

  • Excessive thirst - Extreme thirst and increased urination are common signs and symptoms of diabetes. When you have diabetes, excess glucose-- a type of sugar-- develops in your blood. Your kidneys are forced to work overtime to filter and absorb the excess glucose. When your kidneys can not keep up, the excess glucose is excreted into your urine, dragging along fluids from your tissues, which makes you dehydrated. This will usually leave you feeling thirsty. As you consume more fluids to quench your thirst, you will urinate even more.

  • Weight loss - When you lose glucose through regular urination, you also lose calories. At the same time, diabetes might keep the glucose from your food from reaching your cells-- causing continuous hunger. The combined result can possibly trigger rapid weight loss, especially with type 1 diabetes.

  • Dry mouth – Is when your mouth is struggling to produce adequate amounts of saliva. Dry mouth in common people with type I and type II diabetes, but if you are experiencing dry mouth nearly every day, you should not ignore it. If you already have diabetes a dry mouth can be a sign and cause of something more serious.

  • Feeling sleepy - Diabetes can affect your body's energy and growth. The body uses sugar for fuel. Soreness or heat can cause sugar levels to rise in the blood, causing high sugar levels. When sugar levels in the blood rise, the body uses sugar to raise its level. This interferes with the proper functioning of your hormones which control muscle growth and energy production.

  • Mood swings - When sugar levels rise, your kidneys take the sugar from your blood and store it in the body's fat cells. Sugar levels can go up so much they cause you to become irritable or moody. You may wake up feeling cranky or start the day feeling depressed. There is a strong correlation between lack of sleep and the risk of developing type II diabetes. A good night's sleep helps your sugar levels to go down.

  • What Does All This Mean?

A lot of factors come into play when developing type II diabetes. But one of the biggest factors is diet, especially how much you consume of certain foods. If you have a genetic predisposition to type II diabetes, then the major player is diet.

If you are prediabetic, then the main factor is amount of exercise. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to become physically fit. And I stress the word 'you'. For the most part, the factors are not exclusive to prediabetics; you can have some of them, but most do not. Your prediabetic condition is a reflection of your lifestyle, not prediabetes.

So, How Do You Change Your Lifestyle?

Change your eating habits. Avoid or reduce the consumption of saturated fat, trans fats, and high glycaemic index carbohydrates such as potatoes, white bread, rice cakes, crackers, bagels, cakes, doughnuts, croissants. Try to eat at the same time each day and include a source of diverse fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. There are vegetable juices that are blended with minimal added sugar. And the best way to do this is by using a microwave. Just put a handful of mixed vegetables into a microwaveable dish and then microwave for 30 seconds.

If you like sweets, eat a small amount of sugar candy or fruit juice in moderation. And if you need to drink milk, drink unsweetened almond milk or soy milk. And whenever you cook with fat, use butter, olive oil, or coconut oil.

Get rid of the processed foods. There are whole grain breads, cereal, fruits, vegetables, and rice that are more healthier and have fewer carbs. Why not go for whole grain flour and rice in your cooking instead of white flour or white rice. Avoid pasta and noodles as much as possible. There are whole grain breads, pasta, tortillas, wraps, burgers, casseroles, and fajitas that are healthy and low in carbs. Avoid white rice, barley, and potatoes.
