Cooking Converter

Convert cooking weights, volumes and temperatures, or use ingredient-aware conversions between cups and grams.

Everything stays in your browser.

1. Choose conversion

Ingredient conversions are approximate because brands, packing and moisture content vary.

HOW IT WORKS

Convert Cooking Measurements Without Guesswork

The Cooking Converter handles common recipe measurements including grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, milliliters, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, pints and oven temperatures.

For ingredients such as flour, sugar and butter, it can also convert between volume and weight. Those conversions use an ingredient-specific value because a cup of one ingredient does not necessarily weigh the same as a cup of another.

A Quick Example

A US recipe asks for 1 cup of all-purpose flour, but you prefer to weigh ingredients.

1 US cup all-purpose flour
↓
approximately 120 grams (g)

Change the ingredient to butter and the same cup becomes approximately 227 grams (g).

Four Ways to Convert a Recipe

Ingredient

Convert between volume and weight for common cooking ingredients, such as cups of flour to grams or grams of butter to cups.

Weight

Convert directly between grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds. These are straightforward mathematical conversions.

Volume

Convert between milliliters (ml), liters (L), cups, tablespoons (tbsp), teaspoons (tsp), fluid ounces and pints, including the different US and UK sizes.

Temperature

Convert oven temperatures directly between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

WHY THE INGREDIENT MATTERS

A Cup Is a Volume, Not a Weight

Converting cups to grams is different from converting ounces to grams. A cup tells you how much space an ingredient occupies, while grams tell you how much it weighs.

That is why the converter asks which ingredient you are using. Flour is relatively light, while ingredients such as honey, butter and packed brown sugar are much heavier for the same volume.

Approximate Weight of 1 US Cup

Plain flour → 120 grams (g)
Granulated sugar → 200 grams (g)
Butter → 227 grams (g)
Milk → 245 grams (g)
Honey → 340 grams (g)

Ingredient weights are approximate and can vary with brand, packing, moisture content and measuring technique.

US, UK and Metric Measurements Aren’t Always the Same

The name of a unit can be familiar while the actual quantity is different. The converter keeps US and UK measurements separate where that matters.

Cups

1 US cup ≈ 236.6 milliliters (ml)
1 metric cup = 250 milliliters (ml)

Fluid Ounces

1 US fluid ounce (fl oz) ≈ 29.6 milliliters (ml)
1 UK fluid ounce (fl oz) ≈ 28.4 milliliters (ml)

Pints

1 US pint ≈ 473.2 milliliters (ml)
1 UK pint ≈ 568.3 milliliters (ml)

OVEN TEMPERATURES

Convert Fahrenheit and Celsius

Temperature conversion is mathematical, so the converter can translate directly between Fahrenheit and Celsius. For example, 350 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) is approximately 176.7 degrees Celsius (°C).

Recipes often round oven settings to convenient values such as 180 degrees Celsius (°C), and real ovens can run hotter or cooler than their displayed temperature, so the converted figure should still be treated as a practical cooking guide.

Common Examples

300 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) → 148.9 degrees Celsius (°C)
325 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) → 162.8 degrees Celsius (°C)
350 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) → 176.7 degrees Celsius (°C)
375 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) → 190.6 degrees Celsius (°C)
400 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) → 204.4 degrees Celsius (°C)

Cooking Converter FAQs

How many grams are in a cup?

There is no single grams-per-cup value for every ingredient. A cup measures volume while grams measure weight, so the answer depends on what is being measured. For example, the converter uses approximately 120 grams (g) for a US cup of all-purpose flour and 227 grams (g) for a US cup of butter.

Are cup-to-gram conversions exact?

No. Ingredient conversions are approximate because ingredient density can vary with brand, moisture content, packing and measuring technique. For baking where precision is important, weighing ingredients directly is usually preferable.

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?

No. A US cup is approximately 236.6 milliliters (ml), while a metric cup is 250 milliliters (ml). The converter provides separate options for both.

Is a US pint the same as a UK pint?

No. A US pint is approximately 473.2 milliliters (ml), while a UK imperial pint is approximately 568.3 milliliters (ml). Choose the version that matches the recipe you are using.

Can I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius for baking?

Yes. The converter translates mathematically between Fahrenheit and Celsius. Recipe writers often round the converted result to a convenient oven setting, so a result such as 176.7 degrees Celsius (°C) may commonly be used as 180 degrees Celsius (°C).

Can I convert a whole recipe at once?

The current Cooking Converter works one measurement at a time. If you need to change the number of servings first, use the Recipe Scaler and then convert any measurements that need changing.

Need to Adapt the Recipe Too?

Change the number of servings or calculate how much mixture you need for a different baking pan.
