HOW IT WORKS

Find Out What a Recipe Actually Costs

The Recipe Cost Calculator works out how much of each ingredient’s purchase price is actually used in your recipe.

Enter the price and size of the package you bought, then the quantity the recipe uses. Add as many ingredients as you need and the calculator totals them automatically.

Add the number of servings and you will also see the approximate cost per serving.

A Quick Example

Flour
5 pounds (lb) bag costs $4.00
Recipe uses 12 ounces (oz)
Ingredient cost → $0.60

Eggs
12 eggs cost $3.60
Recipe uses 3
Ingredient cost → $0.90

Total recipe cost: $1.50
4 servings: $0.38 each

Three Numbers for Each Ingredient

1 · PRICE

Package Price

Enter what you paid for the whole pack, bottle, bag or other quantity that you bought.

2 · SIZE

Package Size

Enter how much the package contains. For example, 5 pounds (lb) of flour, 2 US cups of an ingredient or 12 eggs.

3 · USED

Amount Used

Enter the amount that goes into the recipe. The calculator works out what proportion of the package that represents.

COMPATIBLE UNITS

You Don’t Need to Use the Same Unit

The package size and recipe quantity can use different units as long as they measure the same kind of thing.

For example, a bag can be entered in pounds (lb) while the recipe quantity is entered in ounces (oz). A measured liquid amount can be entered in US cups while the recipe uses tablespoons (tbsp).

Examples

5 pounds (lb) → use 12 ounces (oz)
4 US cups → use 8 tablespoons (tbsp)
16 ounces (oz) → use 4 ounces (oz)
12 items → use 3 items

WHEN UNITS DON’T MATCH

Sometimes You Need to Convert the Ingredient First

The cost calculator can convert between compatible weight units or compatible volume units, but it does not guess the weight of an ingredient from its volume.

If your flour is sold by weight but the recipe uses cups, first use the Cooking Converter to turn the cups into ounces. Then enter that ounce quantity here.

Compatible

  • pound (lb) ↔ ounce (oz)
  • US cup ↔ tablespoon (tbsp)
  • tablespoon (tbsp) ↔ teaspoon (tsp)
  • kilogram (kg) ↔ gram (g)
  • liter (L) ↔ milliliter (ml)
  • items ↔ items

Convert First

Weight ↔ volume, such as ounces (oz) ↔ US cups.

Cost More Than One Ingredient

Start with one ingredient and use Add another ingredient to build up the recipe. Each ingredient keeps its own package price, size and quantity used.

The result panel shows the total cost and a breakdown so you can see which ingredients contribute most to the price.

Flour → $0.60
Eggs → $0.90
Butter → $0.85
Sugar → $0.31

Recipe total → $2.66

COST PER SERVING

See What Each Portion Costs

The total ingredient cost is divided by the number of servings you enter.

This is useful for comparing homemade recipes, planning a meal budget or simply seeing how much a particular dish costs to make.

Example

Recipe total → $6.72
Servings → 6

$6.72 ÷ 6
= $1.12 per serving

A Currency Symbol, Not a Currency Converter

The calculator defaults to US dollars (USD). If your prices use another currency, you can select a different supported currency before calculating.

It does not fetch exchange rates or convert prices between currencies. If you enter prices in US dollars (USD), the result remains in US dollars.

Recipe Cost Calculator FAQs

How is the ingredient cost calculated?

The calculator works out what proportion of the package your recipe uses, then applies the same proportion to the package price. For example, if a recipe uses one fifth of a $2 package, that ingredient contributes $0.40 to the recipe cost.

Can I use pounds for the package and ounces for the recipe?

Yes. Compatible weight units are converted automatically, so a package can be entered in pounds (lb) while the recipe amount is entered in ounces (oz). Metric weight units and compatible volume units are also supported.

How do I calculate the cost of eggs or other individual items?

Choose the item unit for both the package and the quantity used. For example, if 12 eggs cost $3.60 and the recipe uses 3 eggs, the ingredient cost is $0.90.

What if my ingredient is sold in ounces but the recipe uses cups?

Weight and volume are not directly interchangeable without knowing the ingredient. Use the Cooking Converter to convert the recipe quantity to ounces first, then enter the converted amount into the cost calculator.

Does the calculator include electricity, gas or other cooking costs?

No. The current calculator totals the ingredient costs you enter. It does not estimate energy use, equipment costs, delivery charges, travel costs or the value of your time.

Does it include ingredients I already have at home?

Only if you enter them. The calculator treats every ingredient according to the package price and quantity you provide, whether you bought it today or already had it in the pantry.

Are my ingredient prices saved?

No. The current calculator performs its calculations in your browser. The ingredient names, quantities and prices you enter are not stored in a SinOrSlim recipe-cost database.

Need to Adapt the Recipe First?
