WHY IT WORKS

Why This Recipe Works

01

Keep the Coffee Bold

Strong, fully chilled coffee stays distinct after the milk, protein powder and ice are blended in.

02

Build in Hazelnut Flavor

Natural hazelnut butter adds roasted nut flavor and body without turning the shake into a chocolate-hazelnut drink.

03

Blend Cold and Fast

Adding the ice last and blending just until smooth keeps the shake cold, creamy and easy to pour.

  1. Add the chilled coffee, milk, protein powder, hazelnut butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt to a blender.
  2. Add the ice cubes. Blend on high for about 30 to 45 seconds, until the shake is smooth and lightly frothy. Stop once to scrape down the blender if needed.
  3. Check the consistency. If the shake is thicker than you like, blend in 1 to 2 tablespoons (tbsp) chilled coffee or milk. If it is too thin, add a few more ice cubes and blend again.
  4. Pour into a tall glass. Top with the chopped hazelnuts and a light dusting of cocoa powder, if using, and serve immediately.

COOKING GUIDANCE

Practical Cooking Notes

Make Ahead

Brew and chill the coffee up to 2 days ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator. The finished shake is best blended just before serving because the ice will melt and thin it as it stands.

Recipe Notes

Ingredient Notes

Use strongly brewed coffee that is completely chilled before blending so the coffee flavor stays noticeable without melting the ice. Natural hazelnut butter, with hazelnuts as the main ingredient, gives the shake a clear roasted hazelnut flavor.

Useful Substitutions

Whole milk can replace the 2% milk for a richer shake. A different vanilla protein powder can also be used, but sweetness and thickening vary by brand, so taste before adding extra maple syrup.

INGREDIENT QUALITY

Quality Note

Use coffee that is completely chilled before blending so the ice stays cold and the coffee flavor remains distinct. If the hazelnut butter has separated in the jar, stir it thoroughly before measuring.

SPEND LESS

Cost-Saving Tip

Brew a little extra coffee when you are already making a pot and chill it for this shake. The chopped hazelnut garnish is optional and can be skipped without changing the shake itself.

COOKING TIPS

Tips

Chill the Coffee Fully

Warm coffee melts the ice quickly and can make the shake thin. Refrigerate the brewed coffee until cold before you blend.

Build in Hazelnut Flavor

Add the liquid ingredients and protein powder first, then the ice. This gives the powder a better chance to disperse before the mixture thickens.

Blend Until Smooth

Blend for about 30 to 45 seconds, stopping once if needed to scrape down the blender. Longer blending can warm the shake and melt more ice.

Adjust After Blending

If the shake is too thick, blend in a splash of chilled coffee or milk. If it is too thin, add a few more ice cubes and blend again.

MAKE IT AHEAD

Best Fresh & Make-Ahead Tips

Best Fresh

For the thickest, smoothest texture, drink the shake as soon as it is blended. Ice will gradually melt and thin it as it stands.

Short-Term Storage

If necessary, refrigerate the finished shake in a covered container for up to 24 hours. Separation is normal; stir well or briefly reblend before serving.

Chill Coffee Ahead

Brew the coffee up to 2 days ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator so it is cold and ready when you want to blend the shake.

Freeze Coffee Cubes

For an even stronger coffee flavor, freeze extra brewed coffee in an ice-cube tray and replace some of the regular ice with coffee cubes.

QUESTIONS

Hazelnut Coffee Protein Shake FAQs

What kind of coffee works best in this shake?

Strong brewed coffee works well as long as it is fully chilled. Regular drip coffee, French press coffee or cold brew can all work; a stronger brew keeps the coffee flavor distinct after blending.

What hazelnut product should I use?

Use natural hazelnut butter with hazelnuts as the main ingredient. Chocolate-hazelnut spread is much sweeter and adds a chocolate flavor, so it is not a direct replacement for the base recipe.

Can I use plant-based protein powder?

Yes, but different protein powders absorb liquid and sweeten the shake differently. Use a vanilla or neutral-flavored powder that suits coffee and hazelnut, then adjust the thickness after blending if needed.

Can I make this shake dairy-free?

The base recipe uses 2% milk and whey protein powder, so it is not dairy-free. It can be adapted with suitable dairy-free milk and protein powder, but check the labels of the products you choose if dairy avoidance is important.

Why is my protein shake too thick or too thin?

Protein powders and ice cubes vary, so the exact thickness can change. Blend in 1 to 2 tablespoons of chilled coffee or milk if it is too thick, or add a few more ice cubes if it is too thin.
