WHY IT WORKS
Why This Recipe Works
01
Freeze the Banana
A frozen ripe banana thickens the shake and keeps it cold without relying on a large amount of ice.
02
Layer the Coconut
Coconut milk beverage and unsweetened shredded coconut give the drink a clear coconut flavor without overwhelming the banana.
03
Blend in Stages
Blending the liquid and softer ingredients first helps the protein powder disperse before the ice is added.

Blend on high for about 30 seconds, until the banana is broken down and the protein powder is fully incorporated.

Recipe Notes
Ingredient Notes
Use a fully ripe banana for the best natural sweetness and banana flavor. Freezing the sliced banana first gives the shake a thicker texture; an unfrozen banana still works, but the drink will be looser.
Useful Substitutions
Plain or unflavored whey protein can replace vanilla whey; add a little more vanilla extract if needed. Coconut milk beverage can be replaced with another milk, but the finished drink will have a less pronounced coconut flavor.
INGREDIENT QUALITY
Quality Note
Use a ripe banana and freeze it in slices before blending. It gives the shake more banana flavor and a thicker texture without requiring a large amount of ice.
SPEND LESS
Cost-Saving Tip
Freeze ripe bananas before they become overripe and unusable. Sliced frozen banana keeps well for shakes and helps reduce food waste.
COOKING TIPS
Tips
Start With the Liquid
Pour the coconut milk beverage into the blender before the powder and frozen ingredients so the blades can move freely from the start.
Layer the Coconut
Blend just until smooth. Running the blender much longer than needed can warm the shake and make it less refreshing.
Adjust the Thickness
For a thinner shake, blend in a splash more coconut milk beverage. For a thicker one, add a few extra ice cubes and blend again.
Drink It Fresh
The shake is thickest immediately after blending. If it sits, stir or briefly reblend before serving.
MAKE IT LAST
Storing & Freezing
Storing
For the best texture, drink the shake immediately. If needed, refrigerate it in a covered container for up to 24 hours and stir or reblend before serving.
Freezing
Freeze leftover shake in an ice cube tray, then transfer the cubes to a freezer bag. Reblend the frozen cubes with a splash of coconut milk beverage when ready to drink.
Make Ahead
Slice and freeze the banana ahead of time so the shake can be blended in a few minutes. Keep the banana pieces in a sealed freezer container.
For a Colder Shake
Chill the coconut milk beverage before blending and use the ice straight from the freezer rather than letting it soften.

QUESTIONS
Banana Coconut Protein Shake FAQs
Can I use a fresh banana instead of a frozen banana?
Yes. The shake will be slightly thinner, so add a little more ice if you want a thicker, colder texture.
What kind of protein powder works best?
Vanilla whey protein works well because it supports the banana and coconut flavors without adding another dominant flavor. Plain whey protein also works.
Can I use canned coconut milk?
You can, but canned coconut milk is much richer than coconut milk beverage. Use a smaller amount and dilute it with cold water until the shake reaches the consistency you like.
Why is my protein shake too thick?
Frozen banana, shredded coconut and protein powder all thicken the drink. Blend in coconut milk beverage a tablespoon or two at a time until it moves easily in the blender.
Can I make this shake ahead of time?
It is best freshly blended, but you can refrigerate it in a covered container for up to 24 hours. Stir or briefly reblend it before drinking because the texture may separate as it stands.
