WHY IT WORKS
Why This Recipe Works
01
Mocha Flavor Without Syrup
Chilled coffee and unsweetened cocoa give the shake a clear chocolate-coffee flavor without needing a flavored coffee syrup.
02
Banana Adds Body
A ripe banana thickens the shake naturally and balances the bitterness of the coffee and cocoa.
03
Protein Blends In Easily
Chocolate whey protein reinforces the mocha flavor while milk keeps the finished shake smooth and drinkable.

Recipe Notes
Ingredient Notes
Use coffee that is fully chilled before blending so it does not warm the shake or melt the ice too quickly. Chocolate whey protein powders vary in sweetness and thickness, so use one you already enjoy as a drink. A ripe banana gives the best balance of sweetness and body.
Useful Substitutions
Cold brew coffee can replace the chilled brewed coffee when diluted to normal drinking strength. Whole milk can replace 2% milk for a richer shake, while skim milk will make it slightly lighter and less creamy.
INGREDIENT QUALITY
Quality Note
Protein powders vary noticeably in sweetness, cocoa intensity and thickening power. Use a chocolate whey protein powder you already like on its own, then adjust the final thickness with the reserved milk rather than adding extra sweetener automatically.
SPEND LESS
Cost-Saving Tip
Use leftover brewed coffee that has been chilled rather than making a fresh batch only for the shake, and freeze ripe bananas before they become overripe if you want to use them in future shakes.
COOKING TIPS
Tips
Chill the Coffee First
Hot or warm coffee will thin the shake and melt the ice, so let it cool completely before blending.
Add the Liquid First
Putting the coffee and milk into the blender before the banana and protein powder helps the blades move freely and reduces powder sticking to the sides.
Blend Until Fully Smooth
Give the shake 30 to 45 seconds of blending so the cocoa and protein powder disperse evenly and the banana becomes completely smooth.
Adjust the Thickness
If the shake is thicker than you like, blend in a little of the reserved milk. For a thicker result, add one or two extra ice cubes.
MAKE IT LAST
Storing, Freezing & Reheating
Best Fresh
This shake has the smoothest texture immediately after blending. If you need to hold it briefly, cover and refrigerate it promptly, then stir or shake well before drinking because some separation is normal.

QUESTIONS
Pre-Workout Mochachino Protein Shake FAQs
Can I use decaf coffee?
Yes. Decaf brewed coffee gives the same chocolate-coffee flavor with much less caffeine.
Can I use espresso instead of brewed coffee?
Yes. Use chilled espresso and add enough cold water to make the same 1/2 US cup (120 milliliters) of coffee liquid. The caffeine level will depend on the coffee and number of shots used.
Do I need a frozen banana?
No. This recipe uses a regular ripe banana plus ice, so it can be blended without planning ahead. A frozen banana can be used for an even thicker shake; reduce the ice if needed.
Can I make this shake dairy-free or vegan?
Yes. Use unsweetened soy milk and a chocolate plant protein powder in place of the dairy milk and whey protein. Choose products with a flavor and sweetness level you already like.
Can I prepare the shake ahead of time?
For the best texture, blend it just before drinking. You can brew and chill the coffee in advance and keep the other ingredients ready so the shake takes only a few minutes to assemble.
